Boat Safety & Responsible Boating

Here are some safety and environment tips published by the NSW Roads & Maritime Services. Designed to keep you safe on the water, we think they're worth repeating:

  • A lifejacket never ruined a day on the water. Be safe and wear yours.
  • Check the weather before leaving, and keep an eye on it while out.
  • Keep your engine in good working order.
  • Check fuel system for leaks before starting the engine.
  • Be aware of your noise and your wash.
  • Dispose of all waste properly ashore.
  • Stay in touch - install a marine radio and an EPIRB. Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.
  • Carry sufficient fuel and water.
  • Know the distress signals and navigation rules.
  • When navigating or anchoring in shallow waters, take care not to damage seagrass beds.
  • Go easy with alcohol and stay under the legal limit.
  • Be Prop Aware - especially around swimmers, spearfishers and snorkellers.
