Handy Hints: Precision Watt Meter

The watt meter is a handy device that allows you to keep tabs on what voltage is in your battery and the power (amps) that the appliance is consuming. It is also super handy in conjunction with your solar panels to track the sun and ensure that the maximum power is being supplied to your batteries all day.

"How much power is my fridge using?", there is no straight forward answer to this question as there are many factors that contribute to power consumption. For example, your fridge will draw more power in summer than in winter, freezer settings draw substantial power compared to fridge settings, and how many times th fridge is opened. The Precision Watt Meter will provide you with data on how much power your fridge is truly consuming.

To use the watt meter, use the two Anderson style connections to plug it into your fridge and inverter. On the plugs you will find the word "source" on one end, and "lead" on the other, use the source end to connect to you AC/DC inverter and use lead end to connect to your fridge.

On the display:

  • The top right of the screen shows the voltage supplied.
  • The top left of the screen shows the amps.
  • The bottom right of the screen shows the watts.
  • The bottom left of the screen will flow through a data sequence which includes:
  1. Ah (Amp hours): This is the overall amount of power consumed.
  2. Wh (Watt hours): This is the total energy delivered.
  3. Ap (Amps peak): This is the maximum current drawn from the load side.
  4. Vm (Volts minimum): Lowest recorded voltage, can help determine what voltage your fridge may cut out.
  5. Wp (Watt peak): This is the maximum power drawn on the load side.

Charging your battery via solar panels or an AC/DC charger:

Plug the load side to your battery and the source side to your solar panel so that the flow of electricity is from the panels to the battery. Connecting this up is the opposite to the process above.

To achieve the best position, face the pannels towards the sun and watch the top left of the screen of the watt meter (this is the amps). Move the panels to achieve the highest number of amps, when you find this spot, set the panels in position. Check and move your panels throughout the day to catch the maximum amount of power from the sun.
