Frequently Asked Questions
-
What does the "xsv" in the model name mean, and do I need a separate sonar black box?
The "xsv" designation means the unit has built-in high-definition sonar scanning capabilities. It natively supports dual-channel 1kW CHIRP traditional, ClearVü, and SideVü sonar, as well as Panoptix™ and LiveScope™ sonar. As long as you plug a compatible transducer directly into the back of the unit, you do not need an external sonar black box, making for a much cleaner install.
-
How do I update the software and charts on my GPSMAP 9017xsv?
You can update your device in two ways:
- Wireless (Recommended): Use the Garmin ActiveCaptain® app on a compatible smartphone or tablet. Connect your mobile device to the chartplotter's built-in Wi-Fi to automatically download and sync software updates and chart subscriptions.
- Computer: Download the Garmin Express™ application on a PC or Mac, download the updates to a blank microSD card, and insert it into the card reader on the back of the chartplotter.
-
Why is my device unable to acquire GPS/satellite signals, and how do I fix it?
If your 9017xsv isn't locking onto satellites, it is typically due to positioning:
- Internal Antenna: If you are using the built-in 10 Hz receiver, ensure the unit has a clear view of the sky. If it's flush-mounted deep inside a hardtop cabin, fiberglass or metal may block the signal.
- External Antenna: If the internal view is obstructed, you will need to network an external Garmin GPS antenna via NMEA 2000®. If you already have one, check `Communications > NMEA 2000 Setup > Device List` to ensure the chartplotter recognizes the external antenna.
-
What is the difference between the new Garmin BlueNet™ network and standard NMEA 2000 on this device?
The GPSMAP 9017xsv uses both networks for different purposes:
- Garmin BlueNet: This is Garmin's high-speed Ethernet equivalent. It offers gigabit speeds and is used to share massive amounts of data across multiple screens—like high-definition radar, live sonar (LiveScope), and synchronized video/audio.
- NMEA 2000: This is an industry-standard, low-speed data network. It is used to connect to your marine engine, autopilot, VHF radios, Fusion® stereos, and digital switching systems to monitor and control basic boat data.
-
Are my existing Garmin Navionics+™ chart cards plug-and-play, or do they need activation?
While supplemental map subscriptions on a microSD card come preloaded with regional data, you must activate the card before you can download daily chart updates or access premium features like Auto Guidance+™ technology. You can activate your map subscription by registering the card through the Garmin ActiveCaptain app on your phone while connected to the internet.
